Access Restrictions
Drones offer a great opportunity to work in a smarter, safer and more efficient way. They make it easier to undertake certain activities while reducing risk to our people, road works and customers.
Now that drones are more accessible and widely used, we must make sure we use them safely.
Uncontrolled drones can damage our infrastructure assets and distract drivers. They can also disrupt other safety-critical air traffic and ground-based activities.
If you intend to fly drones in the vicinity of trunk roads, including the Queensferry Crossing and Forth Road Bridge, you should fly them in accordance with GG 954 – Drones Operations, our DMRB Drones Standard.
In addition, no drone is permitted to fly above a live carriageway or bridge without express permission from Transport Scotland.
Drone operators must hold a current and relevant CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) and an accepted safety risk assessment in accordance with GG104 by Transport Scotland.
Do you fly drones as part of your business’s operations, or perhaps as a hobby?
We don't own the airspace around our road network, but we ask you to notify us if you're planning to fly a drone in its vicinity. This is so we can make sure there aren’t any clashes with our own drone activity.
If you wish to contact us regarding an operation, mail: tsstandardsbranch@Transport.gov.scot.
If you are a supplier and work for BEAR Scotland on the Queensferry Crossing or Forth Road Bridge and would like to operate drones, please contact the relevant Operating Company who will obtain permission from Transport Scotland on your behalf. For general enquires contact Enquiries@bearscotland.co.uk.
The Operating Company can advise you about what you need to do to comply with our policy.
The Operating Company can also provide you with templates to help you develop your safety risk assessment.
If you are a supplier and work on the Forth Bridge (rail) please contact Network Rail.
If you wish to contact us regarding an operation, mail: tsstandardsbranch@Transport.gov.scot.
Forth Ports requires mandatory notification at least 2 days before flying drones over Forth & Tay Estuaries or port estates by submitting a Drone Flight Notification Form to the Marine department. Operators must comply with CAA regulations, maintain safe distances, and consider drone images as sensitive, protected data.
Notifications to Forth Ports can be made in accordance with the following guidance: Forth-Ports-Drone-Guidance.pdf.
